I'm playing Mabinogi at the moment. It's not the perfect MMORPG, but it is unique in that skill, not stats, determine how good your character will be. This may sound confusing, but the funny thing about Mabinogi is that just about every enemy can kill you, and kill you easily, so your knowledge of how the monster will react to certain situations determines your ability as a player. Harder monsters become a game of keeping up an "Endless combo" of sorts, constantly countering and stunning to make sure it can't hit you.
What I also like about the game is it's freedom. I can play as a melee character, a mage, an archer, an alchemist, or any combination of the four without penalty. I can have the highest ranking melee abilities, magic abilities, archery abilities, and alchemy abilities all at the same time. Sure, this would take forever to obtain, but it's a possibility. And this isn't a game you commit to, as you can rebirth your character every three weeks. This will reset it's stats, but you keep whatever points you have invested in skills. Basically, I get roughly 40-50 ability points to spend a month on making my character better.
